The answer depends on your riding experience, confidence, budget, and what kind of trip you want to have. While there is no single perfect bike for everyone, there are definitely bikes that are better suited for the mountain roads of Ha Giang.

After years of seeing thousands of riders complete the Loop, here is our honest opinion on the most common choices.

1. Honda Blade 110 – The Best All-Round Choice for Most Riders

Recommended for: First-time riders, beginners, budget travellers, cautious riders.

The Honda Blade 110 is the standard bike offered by most operators, and for good reason.

It is lightweight, forgiving, easy to repair, and parts can be found in every village throughout northern Vietnam. Despite its modest engine size, it is surprisingly capable of climbing the mountain passes of Ha Giang.

• Lightweight and easy to control
• Excellent fuel economy
• Cheap to repair
• Reliable and proven
• Good for riders with limited experience

Cons

• Less power when riding with a passenger
• Basic suspension
• Small wheels can feel less stable on rough sections
• Limited engine braking compared to larger bikes

For 90% of riders doing the Loop for the first time, the Blade is still one of the smartest choices.

2. Yamaha PG-1 – Stylish but More Niche

Recommended for: Confident riders who prioritize aesthetics and slower-paced exploration.

The Yamaha PG-1 has recently become popular thanks to its retro-adventure styling. It certainly looks cool and suits the mountain atmosphere.

However, it is not necessarily a better touring machine than the Blade.

The PG-1 is a bike chosen with the heart more than the head. Riders who love its appearance usually adore it, but objectively it offers only a modest improvement over a standard 110cc underbone.

3. Yamaha Exciter 150 / Honda Winner X – For Experienced Riders Who Enjoy Sportier Bikes

Recommended for: Experienced riders, solo travellers, riders comfortable with manual motorcycles.

These bikes are often marketed as upgrades, but they are not necessarily upgrades for everyone.

They are essentially sporty underbone motorcycles designed for paved roads.

Pros

• Much stronger acceleration
• Excellent overtaking ability
• Better brakes
• Higher cruising speeds

Cons

• Firmer suspension
• Passenger seat is narrow and less comfortable
• Sportier riding position
• Can encourage inexperienced riders to ride too quickly

For solo riders with experience, they can be a lot of fun.

For couples, however, they are usually less comfortable than expected.

We regularly hear passengers shifting around after several hours looking for a better sitting position.

Power is nice, but comfort matters when you’re spending six hours a day on the bike.

4. Honda XR150 – The Sweet Spot for the Ha Giang Loop

Recommended for: Riders with moderate experience, couples, photographers, comfort-focused travellers.

If there is one bike that receives the most positive feedback from guests, it is probably the Honda XR150.

It combines the advantages of an adventure bike with manageable power and forgiving handling.

• Excellent suspension
• Comfortable upright ergonomics
• Wide passenger seat
• Strong engine braking
• Stable on rough roads
• Confidence inspiring on descents

Cons

• Taller seat height
• Slightly heavier at low speeds
• More expensive rental

Mountain roads are not racetracks.

The Loop is more enjoyable when your body is still comfortable on Day Four.

For many riders, the XR150 offers the best balance between capability, safety and comfort.

5. Yamaha WR155 – The Premium Choice

Recommended for: Experienced motorcyclists who regularly ride dual-sport bikes.

The WR155 is arguably the most capable motorcycle available for the Ha Giang Loop.

It has excellent suspension, a refined engine and genuine off-road potential.

• Very stable handling
• Easily absorbs rough sections
• Best bike for challenging road conditions

Cons

• Tall seat
• Expensive rental
• Overkill for many travellers
• Intimidating for beginners

Most visitors do not actually need a WR155.

But experienced riders often fall in love with it.

If the XR150 is the sweet spot, the WR155 is the enthusiast’s choice.

Why We Do Not Recommend Scooters for the Ha Giang Loop

Every year, some travellers ask whether they can ride the Loop on a scooter such as an Air Blade, Vision, Lead or similar 125cc automatic bike.

Our answer is simple:

We strongly discourage it.

The issue is not engine size.

The issue is safety.

1. Scooters Have Limited Engine Braking

The Ha Giang Loop is full of long mountain descents.

Descending from places like Ma Pi Leng or Du Gia often means riding downhill for many kilometres.

Manual motorcycles allow riders to downshift and let the engine slow the bike.

This is called engine braking.

Engine braking reduces stress on the brakes and provides much better control.

Scooters rely almost entirely on their brakes.

Constant braking can lead to:

• Brake fade
• Overheated brake components
• Reduced stopping power
• Increased risk of accidents

2. Smaller Wheels Are Less Stable

Many scooters use 12–14 inch wheels.

Motorcycles like the XR150 and WR155 have much larger wheels.

Large wheels roll over potholes, gravel and broken pavement more smoothly and predictably.

3. Suspension Travel is Limited

Scooters are designed for cities.

Ha Giang is not a city.

Even though most roads are paved, landslides, roadworks, gravel patches and damaged sections are common.

Adventure-oriented motorcycles simply handle these conditions better.
